History of "Silambam"

Silambam, one of the world’s oldest martial arts, traces its origins to Tamil Nadu, India, over 2000 years ago. Rooted in ancient indian culture, it began as a form of self defense and later evolved into a disciplined art practiced by warriors. References to Silambam are found in Sangam literature, where it is celebrated as a vital aspect of Tamil heritage.
This martial art employs a bamboo staff (silambu) as its primary weapon, alongside techniques involving swords, shields, and bare-hand combat. Traditionally used for survival and warfare, it also became a performance art showcased during festivals.
Silambam flourished under royal patronage in ancient Tamil kingdoms but faced decline during colonial rule. Britishers banned Silambam game as it was found to be threatening. Today, efforts by organizations like the Tamilnadu Silambattam Association have revived and popularized this art, promoting it as a sport and cultural treasure on global platforms.
